Dust

2025

The photographs included in the project and in the previous exhibition, along with the accompanying plaster cast, are traces, imprints, or shadows of deceased beings found in various places: the eider of Söderskär, the young gull found on tram tracks, the reindeer of the fells, and the bergenia cordifolia planted by my grandmother on the family island. The images were originally created without a camera—as lumen prints exposed outdoors in natural light. The traces were formed on light-sensitive photographic paper through the shapes, weight and lightness of their bodies, through light, temperatures, air humidity, wind-blown debris, the chemistry of the paper, and the interplay of all these elements. The process is partly uncontrollable, and to me, that makes it especially suited to these moments, which have felt like small memorials or rituals of mourning.

Exhibited with the title Come to Dust, with photographs and a plastercast, Soile Voima, As part of group exhibition Todellisuuksia / Realities at Vuotalo Gallery Helsinki Sept - Oct 2025.
