Soile Voima

Photography and performance artist

I am a photography and performance artist based in Helsinki, Finland. My work is multidisciplinary, combining photography, multi-material installations, dance, performance art, site-specific art, and text. As part of my work I have been organizing and leading various discussions, multidisciplinary and cross-disciplinary events, installations and encounters thematically related to ecological questions. Beside my own creations I also work as a performer / dancer in collaboration with different choreographers / performance works. I have a master's degree in Photographic Art from Turku University of Applied Sciences from 2024 and Bachelor of Arts in Dance from The Theaterschool / Hoogeschoolen voor de Kunsten Amsterdam in 2009. I often work together with different artists and sometimes with scientists and oftentimes together with my partner, artist Anttoni Halonen as an artistduo Halonen&Voima.

In my work, I explore questions on ecological topics and changes, coexistence with different beings, the ambiguity of reality, and themes related to the human position in the world from a feminist view. I am perpetually fascinated by working in and with different natural environments, living beings and weather conditions and therefore my working happens a lot outside and site-based/specific and often with Northern environments. My work is rooted in my interests on natural sciences, documentary (which is by itself interesting and marvelous), little observations and on myths, poetry and otherworldly. I am curious about events where the ordinary and otherworldly can exist side by side. I aim to work and to present different perspectives in ways that do not take possession of, tame, or manipulate.

My working practices include both analog- and digital photography, with often different experimental tryouts and also practices on performance-, sculptural/multi-materialistic installations, text and site-specific arts. Those practices often are mixed in different volumes and ways together.
